It's weird because everyone who likes SNL likes it in the same tolerant way, but memories are so specific. I was born in '82 was like "What, dissing Mr. Bill??" (little claymation guy) because he seems iconic. I was also like "No Landshark?" which was from the first season before I was born, but I watched Comedy Central reruns in the 90s. In my 30s I've become a horror fan as well as a comedy fan, but going down memory lane made me dig up a repressed memory of Massive Headwound Harry and I do not even want to go watch one of those sketches, still so gross to me lol.

‪God is real and he created us in his image as well as all other things through and by his Son Jesus Christ. Who came down in a fleshy body, he lived without sin and died on the cross for all mankind as he took our righteous punishment we deserved as Godless sinners. And who ever believes in him is forgiven of his/her sin and can enter the kingdom of God and one of his children. Get saved and believe in the accept Jesus Christ and your personal lord and saviour for this is how we are saved. This is the grace of God, so that we may be saved through faith and love. Believe in Jesus my friend, he is the way. I’ll be praying for you in love and I hope you have a nice day ✝️💝‬

Interesting analysis. I've been watching SNL on and off since season 1 when I was a kid. I've never thought of SNL as timeless, its more of the moment. An irrelevant take on the events of the time. The 70s were radically different from now. Culture, politics fashions and even humor change overtime. Very few skits age well from these types of shows. I never watch reruns because of this. You nailed it when you said SNL was always political, as it should be. Political humor is great but most political humor doesn't age well. Just watch the show and enjoy it for what it is. Hit or miss makes the show great because it takes risks. Enjoyed your take. Totally right about nostalgia. Great job.

Weird and annoying how broadcast rights can mean a hugely popular cultural touchstone for one country can be almost completely unknown in another. Being in Australia, SNL is only available on Foxtel, clips on youtube are all blocked and of course do not appear in recommendations. I've always known the show existed but not to the degree that it's a major thing going back to the 70s. The handful of clips I have seen in my life never made an impression on me, they had a half decent joke, then hammered it for about 5 minutes too long. Another thing is that Drew mentions all these actors like they're all household names, but I haven't heard of any of these people that didn't go on to be big tv or movie stars, and those that did, most I didn't know were on this show.

  74. Kimberly Konop

If SNL ever did make fun of Obama, it was a tiny fraction of the Trump skits they did. And it was over 8 years vs 4. That’s the argument. Not that they suddenly went political. They keep going further and further to the left to the point where the point of the skits is now furthering one political point of view. Not to be funny.
